1st August 2023 (sun, cloud, mild) 0km

The unwanted French lesson given by "Les miserables" next door, went on until 11pm. Could have been worse, they could have used a microphone and amp.  She is a non stop talker and barely drew breath..

So...August is here.
We have twenty seven days before we go into the hotel in Tromso.
That time has flown by and it will be strange not to be waking up in the tent.

Cuppa to begin.
Breakfast followed  before a walk on the beach around 10am.
Didn't notice the wind on the way down the beach, but as soon as we turned around and decided to have a sunbathe, before our dip, the wind suddenly got stronger.
Persevered for a while and then decided to go in and see what temperature it was today.

Turns out yesterday afternoon was warmer. We reckon 12- 13C in the water today.  It was very bracing, which would  account for the lack of swimmers at that time of the day.  Today, we were only in for 5 minutes, but if there had been waves, you could definitely have extended it out.

Back to camp, where I had a shower to warm up. Julia didn't. She likes that cold feeling. That's why she married me....!!

Watched as the camp thinned out and before we knew it, we were walking to the shop to buy lunch.
Sat and ate at our closest bench in the sunshine, with the wind now a thing of the past and planned tomorrow's route.

Another walk along the beach after lunch where I happened to jump down from a short height onto, what I thought was sand, but it was rock, just below the surface.

Consequently, I've been unable to walk barefoot on the beach, or hard surfaces since.  Just bruised the heel I guess.  Oh the bloody joys of getting old.  I won't be able to look at something I want to do shortly, without getting injured.
Oh sorry, Julia has delightfully informed me, that I'm already there.

Rode around the tiny village, that is Ramberg looking for shots and /or anything to do.
It was later in the afternoon that we met an English motorcyclist from Durham, Joe who was touring Norway. He had been to Nordkapp, which was a total waste of time, because the weather was shocking and he couldn't see a thing. He was 80 years old and a right good bugger.  How he was still able to ride his heavy BMW motorcycle, I've no idea as he wasn't the fittest 80 year old I've met.  He was still using a tent as well.

After a late afternoon limp along the beach, we got talking to two older cyclists from Holland who have been cycling the islands on this coast.
They gave us some great tips  on roads to use and places to freecamp. Both of them agreed that this area is becoming far too crowded and dangerous for cyclists.

The clouds begin to gather.

The chat led into "beer o clock" then an hour later we were tucking into a Chinese stir fry picked up from the frozen section at the supermarket.  It was delicious but just not enough for two. Good job we had all those chips and cashews. Coffee and muffin followed to fill the gap.

Tomorrow we are expecting some rain.
I just hope we can take the tent down dry.
May look for freecamps over the next few weeks, but we'll see.

    1. Injury all done with. Knew it was only a bruised heal. Glad to hear England are looking good especially after NZ going out. Just don't want those Yanks to win. Getting close to returning. Don't know where the time goes.

  4. Wow I love that shot/s of the curving beach with the mountains as the backdrop. Don’t see that sort of scenery everyday do you ,unless you are in Norway I guess. Try and stay out of trouble Pete,….and you are not even trying to play football ! - 12 or 13 in the water,no wonder the locals are not swimming ,although if they don’t at this time of year, when would they?

    1. Hi mate. Yeah, it's one injury after another. The locals are a bit like those in Greece all those years ago. They spend a lot of time looking, but then just stand in the water with their sunnies on. Never any intention of going under, although the old brain freeze was definitely lurking yesterday.

  5. Luckily you're cycling round norway and not walking ... that heel will be no worries on the bike. How great that u met those dutch cyclists who were able to give u a few tips for the rest of your journey. Had a great day up the mountain today and now my Marguerite and quesadilla are calling ...
